But what if their particular city glitters in a future as close to perfect as possible?Ĭhambers’s Monk and Robot duology, the first half of which won a Hugo Award, popularizes solarpunk, a genre that, according to Stacey Balkan, “ a liberatory politics that marshals solar power” and whose characters “inhabit convivial spaces where historically marginalized communities and a nonhuman landscape live in economic harmony.” Sibling Dex’s world is convivial to the max. Probably everyone can relate to Dex’s claustrophobia, their impulse to cut and run. And then, more drastically, it means giving up on even that vocation to chase the song of crickets in the wild.
“Sometimes,” she writes, “a person reaches a point in their life when it becomes absolutely essential to get the fuck out of the city.” For Sibling Dex, the novella’s genderless protagonist, that means leaving their monastery in order to travel from one town to the next, ministering to the public over cups of specially brewed tea.
